Where one partner may be away for months, a property and financial affairs lasting power of attorney is not a document for old age — it is what allows a house sale to complete, a mortgage to be remortgaged or a car to be sold while the other is deployed. A general power of attorney can cover a short absence, but only a registered LPA continues to work if capacity is ever lost.
Wills that survive a move
Service families move often, and wills need to be robust to that. Naming an executor by their relationship to you rather than by an address they left four postings ago, appointing replacements in case a first choice is unreachable, and choosing guardians who could realistically take on children at short notice all matter more here than in a settled town.
A point worth stressing: a will made in England and Wales remains valid when you move, but marriage revokes it automatically unless it was made in contemplation of that marriage.
